Sometimes the perfect piece of furniture simply does not exist in a showroom. Your pooja corner may have an unusual shape, your living room may need a sofa of a very specific length, or you may have a design from your grandparents' home that you have always wanted to recreate. This is where custom made wooden furniture becomes the answer.
At SOM, bespoke work is at the heart of what we do. Every piece we create is made to order, and for more than 22 years, our artisans in Tamluk, West Bengal, have been turning ideas into handcrafted heirlooms. Here is how the bespoke journey works, and what you should think about before you begin.
Why Choose Bespoke Furniture?
Ready-made furniture is designed for average spaces and average tastes. Bespoke furniture is designed for you. It offers:
A perfect fit: Every dimension is planned for your room, alcove, ceiling height, or wall.
Personal meaning: You can include motifs, symbols, or design elements that matter to your family or traditions.
Your choice of materials: You decide the wood, finish, upholstery, and detailing.
A true one-of-a-kind piece: No one else will own exactly what you have.
Step 1: The First Conversation
Every bespoke project begins with listening. You share what you have in mind: the type of piece, the room it is for, how it will be used, and the style you love. Photos of your space, rough measurements, and reference images from magazines, Pinterest, or old family pieces are extremely helpful at this stage.
You can start this conversation through our Bespoke page, our contact form, or simply on WhatsApp.
Step 2: Shaping the Design
Our team then translates your idea into a design. This is where the important details are decided:
Dimensions: Height, width, depth, and clearance needed around the piece.
Carving style: Grand royal carving, classic traditional motifs, or subtle contemporary accents.
Functional features: Storage drawers in a mandir, under-bed storage, side shelves, or a specific seat depth for a sofa.
Finish: Natural teak, dark walnut, white and gold, all-gold, or a custom combination.
The design is refined with you until it feels exactly right.
Step 3: Selecting the Wood
Great custom carved furniture begins with great timber. Our craftsmen hand-select seasoned teak for grain, density, and age, rejecting far more logs than they accept. Only wood that will carve cleanly and age gracefully is chosen for your piece.
Step 4: Hand Carving
This is where your design comes to life. Our master carvers, many trained over decades, shape every curve, motif, and pillar entirely by hand. Because each detail is carved individually, your piece will carry the natural variations that mark genuine craftsmanship.
Step 5: Assembly With Traditional Joinery
Your furniture is assembled using traditional techniques such as mortise-and-tenon joinery, built to stay strong for generations rather than relying mainly on hardware and glue.
Step 6: Hand-Rubbed Finishing
Polish is applied in patient, hand-rubbed layers, with each coat cured before the next. This builds a deep, rich lustre that grows more beautiful with age.
Step 7: Inspection, Packing, and Delivery
Before your piece leaves the workshop, it is inspected joint by joint and carving by carving. It is then individually padded and crated around its exact shape to protect delicate details. We deliver across India and abroad, and where needed, our team assembles the piece on-site.
Tips for a Smooth Bespoke Experience
Measure carefully: Include doorways, staircases, and lift sizes so large pieces can be delivered easily.
Think about use, not just looks: How many people will sit, what needs to be stored, and how the piece will be cleaned.
Plan ahead: Hand-carved furniture takes time. If you need a piece for a housewarming, wedding, or festival, start the conversation early.
Share references freely: The more we understand your vision, the closer the result will be to your dream.
Bespoke Work for Homes and Designers
Our bespoke service works for individual homeowners as well as interior designers and architects furnishing complete homes. Over the years we have created drawing room refreshes, family temples, sanctuary corners, and courtyard swings for homes across West Bengal and beyond. One Kolkata-based design firm that commissioned a complete bespoke suite told us the craftsmanship matched the finest imported pieces they had used.
Your Vision, Our Craft
Custom made wooden furniture is the most personal way to furnish a home. It reflects your space, your story, and your taste, and with the right craftsmanship, it becomes a legacy for generations.
