For many Indian families, the mandir is the heart of the home. It is where mornings begin with a lit diya, where festivals gather everyone together, and where quiet moments of gratitude happen every day. Because it holds such meaning, a home temple is rarely a casual purchase. It is a piece you will live with for decades, and often one you will pass down to the next generation.
At SOM, we have spent more than 22 years hand-carving temples, swings, and furniture in our Tamluk atelier in West Bengal. Over that time, we have helped hundreds of families find the right mandir for their space. Here is what we recommend you think about before choosing yours.
1. Start With the Right Wood
The wood decides how long your mandir will last and how it will age. Teak wood, known in India as Sagwan, has long been the preferred choice for temple furniture. It is naturally dense, rich in oils that resist moisture and termites, and holds fine carving detail beautifully. A well-made teak mandir does not warp or crack easily, even in humid climates, and its grain deepens in character over time.
Every SOM mandir is made from carefully selected and seasoned teak. Our craftsmen reject far more timber than they accept, because only wood with the right grain and density can carry intricate carving without weakening.
2. Measure Your Space Before You Fall in Love With a Design
A grand mandir with side shelves and a multi-dome top can transform a dedicated pooja room, but the same piece may overwhelm a living room corner. Before you choose, measure the height, width, and depth of the area, and leave comfortable room in front for sitting, lighting a lamp, or performing aarti.
Many families also follow Vastu guidance and place the mandir in the north-east part of the home. If this matters to you, plan the placement first and choose a size that fits that spot.
3. Choose a Finish That Matches Your Home
The finish sets the mood of your prayer space. Our Temple Collection includes several distinct looks:
A dark walnut polish with gold highlights brings warmth and a royal, traditional feel, ideal for homes with classic wooden interiors.
White and gold finishes feel bright, serene, and contemporary, and suit modern apartments with lighter walls and flooring.
All-gold mandirs with red accent back panels create a festive, temple-like grandeur that becomes the visual centrepiece of a room.
Natural teak finishes let the beauty of the wood itself take centre stage.
Whichever finish you choose, ask how it is applied. At SOM, every piece is polished by hand in multiple layers, with each coat allowed to cure before the next. This builds a deep lustre that grows richer with age rather than fading.
4. Look Closely at the Carving
Carving is what separates a handcrafted mandir from a machine-made one. Look at the domes, arches, pillars, and back panel. Are the floral motifs crisp and deep? Do the details flow naturally from one element to the next?
Our master carvers shape every curve and motif entirely by hand. Because of this, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Small variations are not flaws; they are the signature of genuine craftsmanship. Designs such as an Om motif on the back panel, sculpted pillars, or layered domes add spiritual meaning as well as beauty.
5. Don't Forget Storage
A home temple needs more than a place for idols. Incense, diyas, matchboxes, prayer books, oils, and festival decorations all need a home. Mandirs with base cabinets, drawers, or side shelves keep these essentials organised and out of sight, so the prayer space always looks calm and uncluttered.
Some of our designs also include steps, which allow idols and offerings to be arranged at different levels, just as in a traditional temple.
6. Check How It Is Built
A mandir should be built for permanence. Ask about the joinery. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, which SOM uses throughout, are far stronger than pieces held together mainly by screws and glue. Every SOM mandir is also inspected joint by joint and carve by carve before it leaves our workshop.
Delivery matters too. Carved domes and gilded details are delicate, so each piece is individually padded and crated around its exact shape. Where needed, our team assembles the mandir on-site.
7. Consider a Bespoke Mandir
If you cannot find a design that fits your space perfectly, a made-to-order mandir may be the answer. With SOM's bespoke service, you can choose the dimensions, wood, finish, and carving details to match your home and your family's traditions exactly.
Bring Home a Temple That Lasts Generations
