Teak, known in India as Sagwan, is among the most prized woods for furniture. Its strength, natural oils, and rich golden grain make it ideal for pieces meant to last generations. But because teak is valuable, the market is full of furniture labelled "teak" that is actually a cheaper wood, a thin veneer over particle board, or simply stained to look like teak.
Whether you are buying a mandir, swing, sofa, or bed, knowing how to spot original teak wood furniture protects your investment. At SOM, we have worked with seasoned teak for over 22 years in our Tamluk atelier. Here are nine practical checks we recommend to every buyer.
1. Look at the Colour
Genuine teak typically has a warm golden to medium brown colour, which deepens and darkens gracefully with age. Untreated teak may show slight variations in tone across a single piece. Be cautious if the colour looks completely uniform and flat, as this often indicates a heavy stain or paint layer used to disguise a cheaper wood.
2. Study the Grain
Teak usually has a mostly straight grain, sometimes with gentle waves, and a slightly coarse, uneven texture. The grain should flow naturally and continue logically across edges and corners. If the pattern looks printed, repeats exactly, or stops abruptly at the edges, you may be looking at a laminate or veneer.
3. Feel the Surface
Teak is naturally rich in oils. Unfinished or lightly finished teak often feels slightly smooth and oily to the touch. This natural oil is what helps teak resist moisture and termites, and it is one of the reasons the wood has been trusted for centuries.
4. Notice the Weight
Solid teak furniture is dense and heavy. Try lifting a corner of a chair or the edge of a table. If it feels surprisingly light for its size, it may be made of a lighter wood or engineered board. Large teak pieces such as grand mandirs, sofas, and beds should feel substantial and solid.
5. Check the Smell
Freshly cut or sanded teak has a distinctive mild, leathery scent. While finished furniture may not smell strongly, unfinished areas like the underside or the inside of drawers can sometimes give a hint.
6. Inspect Hidden and Unfinished Areas
Turn the piece over or open the drawers and cabinets. The underside, back panels, and drawer interiors reveal a lot. In genuine solid teak furniture, these areas will show real wood grain, not particle board, MDF, or plywood with a thin decorative layer on the surface.
7. Examine the Edges and Corners
Veneered furniture often shows a thin line where the surface layer meets the core material, especially at edges and corners. In solid wood, the grain wraps naturally around corners. Deep, crisp hand carving is also a good sign, as carving requires solid wood; veneers cannot be carved deeply.
8. Ask About Joinery and Construction
Quality teak furniture is usually built with traditional joinery such as mortise-and-tenon joints rather than relying mainly on nails, staples, and glue. At SOM, every piece is assembled using these time-tested methods so it remains strong for generations. A seller who uses genuine solid wood will happily explain how a piece is constructed.
9. Ask About Seasoning and Source
Even real teak can crack or warp if it is not properly seasoned. Ask the maker how the wood is selected and dried. At SOM, our craftsmen hand-select each log for grain, density, and age, rejecting far more timber than they accept. Only seasoned wood that will carve cleanly and age gracefully is used.
A Word on Price
Original teak is a premium material, and hand carving takes skilled artisans weeks to complete. If a large carved "teak" sofa set or mandir is priced far below the market, it is worth asking more questions. Genuine craftsmanship is an investment that pays back over decades of use.
Why Buying From the Maker Matters
Buying directly from an experienced manufacturer gives you transparency. You can ask about the wood, the carving, the finish, and the construction, and get honest answers. At SOM, every piece is made to order, inspected joint by joint before dispatch, and packed carefully around its exact shape for safe delivery across India and abroad.
Invest in Furniture That Becomes an Heirloom
Original teak wood furniture is not just about durability; it is about owning something real, made with skill and care. With these nine checks, you can buy with confidence and bring home a piece that will be cherished for generations.
